Is it true that after a long drop hanging, when the neck snaps, it simply paralyzes the person and they still die by asphyxiation? Is the neck snap for the benefit of the witnesses then? Because the person is still strangling? Theyre not actually insta dead?

 

In my opinion, yes, but for a maximum of 1-2 seconds. You might feel the pressure on your neck and your larynx constricting for an instant, and you might be slightly aware of it.
But in fact, the neck breaks and all the nerve endings to the brain are severed, and you can't feel anything beyond that.
Perhaps if the neck doesn't break completely, then you might not be able to move your body but you might still feel something for a few more seconds, but it would still be very little.

 

So you dont feel anything neck down but youre not unconscious either and you can still feel the squeeze of the rope and suffering of asphyxiation?

 

At most one or two seconds, because the moment your neck breaks, your mind might still be conscious enough to perceive something, perhaps because some pain receptors in the neck are still sending weak signals to the brain, but these signals fade within two seconds.
So, practically speaking, you might feel something in those two seconds, but it's still only two seconds.

 

You mean if you remain for several minutes with a broken neck, unable to move, feeling the pain of strangulation?
This cannot happen (if the neck is completely broken).
