Both the modern films, though telling different stories, are based on the real-life case of Eoudong, the 15th Century courtesan.

She is also the subject of the two earlier movies referenced by Frobotz.
Not been able to locate the 1987 one, but the 1985 was the subject of an old clip featured on this site.
